Transmission Services; Why Are They Important?

When thinking of vehicle maintenance, many people know their oil needs to be changed regularly and that their tires need to be rotated. One of the systems that is often overlooked is the transmission system, the key component that transfers power from the engine and makes it usable at the wheels. So why is it important to service the transmission and keep it maintained?

The Role of Engine Oil and Transmissions in Your Vehicle

We know it’s important to change our engine oil often, as there are tons of moving parts that need to be lubricated to create the power that keeps us getting to work, picking up the kids, and running to the grocery store. The transmission allows your car to move at different speeds while also managing the engine's power output.

The Evolution of Transmissions

With today’s technology and engineering, many different types of transmissions have come into play in our vehicles. Most of society has moved on from the standard manual transmission to the automatic transmission for reasons including performance, efficiency, and fuel economy.

There are many different types of semi and fully automatic transmissions, such as the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox). They all work slightly differently for different applications, but serve the same purpose. Putting power to the ground and getting you moving. And if you guessed that they all need to be serviced, you’re right!

Why Servicing Your Transmission is Essential

With so many different transmissions, you might think servicing them is a potential pain in the neck and prepare yourself for a headache. But there’s no need to worry. Ensuring your transmission lasts as long as it should only requires attention to a few key aspects.

The Importance of Using the Right Transmission Fluid

Using the correct fluid is critical. Different transmission systems require different fluids to properly lubricate their moving parts. Some systems even demand vehicle-specific fluids with unique properties and additives.

Using the wrong fluid can lead to significant problems, such as:

  • Overheating
  • Burning
  • Slipping
  • Hard shifts

Once these issues start, the damage is often irreversible, significantly increasing the risk of complete transmission failure. By understanding the basics of transmission care and ensuring regular maintenance, you can avoid costly repairs and keep your car running smoothly.

The Consequences of Delaying Transmission Service

he most critical aspect of maintaining your transmission is ensuring it’s serviced on time. The majority of transmission issues arise from overdue maintenance or systems that have never been serviced.

Over time, transmission fluid deteriorates—becoming dirty, burnt, and eventually breaking down into a sludge-like substance. This degraded fluid:

  • Fails to lubricate components properly
  • Disrupts the delicate balance of tension and resistance needed in these complex systems
  • Clogs the transmission filter (if applicable), hindering its ability to keep components clean and moving freely

In many cases, the filter should be replaced during servicing. However, there are instances when the filter is still in good condition and can simply be cleaned, saving the customer money.

Ignoring transmission service leads to problems such as: slipping, burning, overheating, hard shifts, and complete failure.

When Should You Service Your Transmission?

We recommend that these systems be serviced every 30,000 miles. Some manufacturers are now offering “lifetime fluid”, but we’re honestly not huge fans of that idea. When the internals are under pressure, moving at high speeds, going through cold and hot cycles, and hauling the weight of your entire car, we know that the fluid is going to break down to some extent and there is going to be wear and tear. Unless the transmission’s lifetime is expected to be rather short, we’re not sure how it’s supposed to hold up.

We recommend staying on the safe side, and getting it serviced. It will help ensure smooth gear shifts, optimal fuel efficiency, and overall improved driving experience. Yes, fuel economy can be affected if the transmission has to work harder and requires more power from the engine. Neglecting transmission care can impact your vehicle's responsiveness and efficiency, and even pose a safety risk if it fails while you’re driving!

Special Considerations for Older, High-Mileage Vehicles

While transmission servicing is essential, there are potential risks associated with servicing older vehicles that have high mileage and have not been maintained regularly.

In these cases, the problem lies with friction material from the clutches, which acts as a friction modifier in the old, degraded fluid. The system adapts to this extra friction, and when clean, new fluid is introduced, it may lack the necessary friction to engage the internal components properly. This can lead to:

  • Gear slipping
  • Hard shifts
  • Total transmission failure

Our Recommendation:

  • High-Mileage Vehicles: Consult a certified mechanic before servicing. They can assess the vehicle's age, mileage, and service history to determine the risks.
  • Proactive Care: Avoid these issues altogether by following regular maintenance intervals from the start.

Timely transmission servicing is not just about maintaining performance—it’s an investment in your vehicle’s longevity and safety. By staying proactive and informed, you can avoid costly repairs and enjoy a smoother, more efficient driving experience.

Regular Transmission Servicing: A Simple Step for Big Savings

Regularly servicing your vehicle's transmission is not just a maintenance task—it's a crucial step in ensuring your vehicle's longevity, performance, and safety. It’s typically a pretty inexpensive service that can save you from a tow truck and a costly repair down the road if done the right way. No one wants to get stuck on the side of the road, so don't wait for warning signs! Make transmission services a regular part of your vehicle care routine. Your car will thank you, and you'll enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing you're taking good care of your investment. We hope this gives a better understanding of why transmission services are important to those who are looking, and as always, you can reach out to us at (973) 663-4472 or visit our website to learn more about transmission services. As the temps start to climb and those long-awaited summer road trips get penciled into your calendar, it’s time to give your vehicle some serious attention—starting with the cooling system. This unsung hero under your hood does the critical job of keeping your engine at the right temperature, even when the pavement’s sizzling and the traffic is crawling. How Your Cooling System Works Your engine generates an incredible amount of heat while running—far more than it can handle on its own. That’s where the cooling system comes in. Here's a quick breakdown of the main components: Coolant (antifreeze) circulates through the engine, absorbing heat. The radiator transfers that heat from the coolant to the air outside. The thermostat regulates coolant flow based on temperature. The water pump keeps the coolant moving through the system. Hoses connect it all together and help move coolant where it needs to go. When all these parts are working in harmony, your engine stays within a safe operating temperature. What Happens When It Overheats? If the cooling system is compromised—due to old coolant, a cracked hose, a stuck thermostat, or a tired water pump—your engine is at risk of overheating. That can lead to: Blown head gaskets Warped engine components Complete engine failure In other words, the kind of damage that turns a weekend road trip into a stranded-on-the-shoulder nightmare.

Why This Essential Fluid Needs a Springtime Refresh When you think about your car’s braking system, what comes to mind? Likely, it's the brake pads, rotors, or even the calipers. But one of the most crucial—and often ignored—components of your braking system is the brake fluid. This hydraulic fluid plays a vital role in stopping your vehicle safely, and yet, many drivers don’t realize it requires regular maintenance. What Does Brake Fluid Do? Brake fluid is the unsung hero of your braking system. It transfers force from your foot pressing the brake pedal to the brake components, creating the pressure needed to stop your vehicle. Without it, your brakes wouldn’t function properly. How Brake Fluid Absorbs Moisture Over Time Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air over time. Even though your brake system is sealed, small amounts of moisture can still find their way in, leading to: Reduced braking efficiency: Water in the fluid lowers its boiling point, which can cause brake fade—when your brakes become less effective after heavy or prolonged use. Corrosion and rust: Moisture can lead to corrosion inside your brake lines and other components, potentially causing expensive damage. A spongy brake pedal: Too much water in the fluid can make your brake pedal feel soft or unresponsive. Why Spring Is the Best Time for a Brake Fluid Exchange Winter can be tough on vehicles, and your braking system is no exception. Between freezing temperatures, and moisture exposure, brake fluid can degrade more quickly than you think. Here’s why spring is the perfect time for a brake fluid exchange: Temperature changes accelerate moisture buildup. The transition from cold winter months to warmer spring temperatures can cause condensation in your brake lines, increasing water contamination. Your brakes work harder in winter. Snowy, icy roads require frequent braking, which can lead to increased wear on the system and faster fluid degradation. Prepare for summer driving. Whether you’re planning road trips or just enjoying the warm weather, fresh brake fluid ensures your braking system is performing at its best when you need it most. How Often Should You Change Brake Fluid? Most manufacturers recommend exchanging brake fluid every two to three years, but this can vary based on your driving habits, vehicle type, and the climate in which you drive. The best way to know if you’re due is to have a professional inspect your brake fluid for color changes, contamination, or moisture levels.
